As for researchers from the Montreal-based CHUM Research Center, cannabidiol is ineffective in reducing people’s addiction to cocaine. Around 6 million North Americans are regular cocaine users, and almost 1 in 5 enters the addiction state. Besides, there are more than 19 million users of cocaine around the world, as per recent estimates. Unfortunately, no clinical treatment is available for cocaine use disorder. So, researchers have been looking at potential treatment options such as CBD for cocaine addiction.
Cannabidiol is known for the protective way in which it affects the liver and brain. In a piece of research featured in the ‘Addiction’ journal, a team of Canadian scientists from the research center found that it largely has no therapeutic virtue in this regard. As for them, cannabidiol just does not work as a means of helping cocaine addicts to stop the habit. They say that it does not cause the addicts to crave less cocaine or to lessen their possibility of relapsing into the dependence condition.
The leader of the study on CBD and drug addiction, namely Jutras-Aswad, alongside his fellow scientists hired 78 people who were aged 46 years on average. Almost all of them had a severe cocaine addiction. So, the scientists randomly divided those people into two sections: one who would get 800 milligrams of CBD daily, and the second a placebo group.
The participants and the scientists did not know which form of treatment was used. After 10 consecutive days in a hospital as part of detox, the addicts were sent back home. Then, they got weekly health check-ups for three months.
One of the study authors, Violaine Mongeau-Perusse, found cannabidiol’s use to be not more efficacious in treating the issue as compared to a placebo. She said that while cannabidiol is safe, it does not reduce the craving for cocaine or the chance of the user entering the relapse stage after detoxification. Anyhow, Mongeau-Perusse also stated that other pieces of research will be required to keep understanding the conditions where cannabidiol may or may not be useful. Earlier studies have shown that cannabidiol might help people with drug addiction.
Terming their findings conclusive, some of the researchers expect their study to aid in orienting medical guidelines about the therapeutic utilization of cannabidiol. For your information, CBD use has been becoming more popular in not just Canada but also in other parts of the world.
